Gutiérrez Zamora is a small town in Veracruz, Mexico by the River Tecolutla which was Veracruz’s first Italian colony. Set up as a “model colony”, Italians from Genoa arrived but most of them left within a decade. They did begin the practice of planting vanilla here which this region exports internationally. It was named after a Veracruz native who became its governor at one point.
