Laredo is a major border city in Texas, United States, north of Mexico. It was initially founded by the Spanish and ceded to the US after the American invasion of Mexico. Unlike other Texan cities, Laredo has the distinction of also having flown the flag of the short-lived Republic of Rio Grande, about the same time as the aforementioned war. When the town was occupied by Texas, the population held a referendum to petition the US to return it to Mexico. The US rejected the democratic referendum result and the population moved south of the border to found Nuevo Laredo.
