Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The historical, tidy city of Melbourne is by far my favourite Aussie city.

Once again, it’s possible that I was simply easily impressed back then, but I really liked its historical buildings. And the fact that it’s so incredibly to navigate. A extraordinarily well-planned metropolis.

966079_10151938217983998_61306870_o

That’s in spite of the little hiccup: I went out clubbing and unfortunately my friend there couldn’t be with me as he was doing his exams, so I just went alone.

I was, like I am now, rather awkward in clubs and didn’t exactly do anything other than looking at people from afar. Some older guy was hitting me up, even telling me his hotel room number. I didn’t say no, I was undecided. But I guess I didn’t respond much to his advances so he gave up in the end.

Then I had to wait a while before going back to my room as there was a fire alarm in the middle of the night. At least I wasn’t sleeping.

The park was basically British. Big empty spaces unlike those in the Pearl of the East.

I think I was on a monument or something. Honestly don’t remember.

981043_10151938208738998_765080912_o

There’s a free tram going around the historic centre, another reason why I loved it.

Sydney, Australia

1014969_10152009251053998_2069030163_o

I have been to Sydney before this, and found it uneventful. Honestly was planning to pop over to New Zealand but then the airfares were simply too cheap to neglect. (Also couldn’t be bothered to get another SIM card and currency just for a few days in NZ.)

1048668_10152009255148998_1753308427_o

My first visit to Australia was actually overshadowed by the 2006 tsunami as it hit many of our favourite destinations in Thailand and so perhaps it was for the best I went a second time.

1052233_10152009252058998_1883997511_o

I even explored some new places like the hippie town. I’m not a hippie tho. It’s just very colourful with lots of Buddhas and stuff.

1052419_10152009256228998_352100425_o903734_10152009254208998_2068073899_o

In addition, I went to the observatory and it was educational.

1052548_10152009239568998_1443441833_o

Walked all the way to the university too. Architecturally pretty.

1052675_10152009262438998_1212586490_o

And the Blue Mountain. It was nice. Australia was the reason why I wasn’t impressed by the nature sites in Mexico. I’ve seen them all.

I had a bit of a scare here tho – I deviated from the main route just because, and I got lost in the woods (there were no signs or anything). I lost reception too,  and somehow the one split second I got accessing the internet I couldn’t load maps (not that it would really have helped anyway, looking back), but a Facebook message from my mother getting upset as I wasn’t responding to her messages.

As I clearly had more pressing issues at hands, I continued ignoring her and in fact that was the main reason why I’m still not reading all of her messages.

Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

1015597_10151956095778998_2029738946_o

I was a bit of a hipster, and so I didn’t go to the state capital, but a smaller town. Didn’t regret it.

Also, even though it wasn’t a major tourist attraction, I met a friend of mine from Hong Kong on the street. Totally unexpected.

1008907_10151955936033998_326098259_o

Launceston is a Tasmanian town in the northern part of the island, and it’s quite peaceful.

Weirdly, I had plenty of sex there. I guess in a town with perhaps 20 gay people in total, it’s not unexpected that a youngster like me was sought after. There was an older guy who gave me a massage with a happy ending, a straight guy who wanted to experiment, and a bartender who would normally be completely out of my league. Oh, and a random Japanese guy.

706228_10151955937508998_1590748842_o

The Gorge is the main site to visit in the city. It’s gorgeous and within walking distance so it’s great.

1014823_10151955966343998_949121671_o

They’ve likewise got a jolly good museum where you can touch real dinosaur bones. Really cool and interesting.

981277_10151955957638998_632065605_o

Against my parents’ wishes, I also went alone to Cradle Mountain despite it being merely a week after my concussion. The lake, as you can see, was of an intriguing colour; the mountain, pictured above, was of a cradle-like shape.

Happy boy.

1025598_10151955934228998_1910153606_o

And of course there were some European buildings as well. My hostel looked quite nice too.

Byron Bay, Australia

1014959_10151967484068998_1571717804_o

Byron Bay is what you may called oriental Australia – it’s the easternmost point of the Australian mainland (it has got some dependencies, including one called Christmas Island, further east).

1025376_10151967530608998_959897140_o

A lovely lighthouse. Generally-speaking, it’s a good getaway although there may not be much to do.

1052679_10151967531418998_864375767_o

Supposedly, one may be able to spot a whale or two from here. I didn’t. Still worth going though, especially since someone drove me there.

Beyond Brisbane, Queensland

1053334_10152012274413998_942965057_o

I’ve also been to Cairns, by the way. But I don’t have pictures.

1074831_10152021233838998_457355577_o

Whales!!! My first time seeing a whale!!!

They didn’t jump too high and I couldn’t take very good photos of them, but there were loads of them.

240006_10152021234618998_1931615247_o

Before going, I was worried perhaps I wouldn’t be able to spot any, but my hostess told me she had never actually heard of anyone who failed to spot a whale on a trip.

977449_10152021232898998_141399150_o

And it’s true! They were everywhere. Parents with children and quite friendly, too!

976875_10152021234863998_1061744688_o

And not too far from Brisbane city.

192905_10152009225013998_1802970183_o903739_10152009228228998_721859833_o1052186_10152009231858998_1477491505_o1039609_10152009223833998_307731506_o1008924_10152009226683998_1946568130_o979949_10152009230428998_157480747_o

Brisbane is also close to numerous national parks such as this – Springbrook.

I was soooo excited seeing the rainbow with the waterfall I just rushed to get a photo.

1053083_10152009233783998_587739525_o

This might have been a part of Gold Coast? Not sure. Gold Coast is overrated anyway.

Redcliffe. If my memory serves me right, this was the third landing point after Hobart and Sydney for white people in Australia, I think

I’m on a HIGHWAY TO HELL

981644_10151921322053998_1497771639_o

Or rather, a canal of a sort. It’s marvellous in person.

1074438_10152019307478998_1721296637_o

The northernmost point of Rainbow Beach, Sunshine Coast, Greater Brisbane. Surprisingly liberating to be running around this.

1074236_10152019310858998_677187349_o884379_10152019310003998_1390616149_o740700_10152019310488998_384540563_o

It’s called Rainbow Beach for a reason. They don’t hold up though – don’t wash them and do put them in a separate bag if you’re planning to take one home!

469194_10151921316488998_1594553466_o

Sunshine Coast still.

966519_10151937914808998_1861355476_o921065_10151931715728998_1015340884_o920982_10151931719283998_1429948701_o967182_10151931718673998_1414549990_o

My favourite animal!

980496_10151931715328998_1115734919_o

Don’t go into the water! Apparently it’s awfully deep and that in itself isn’t a problem – the sharks that could be hiding real close to the beach are!

976345_10151931714888998_1943411502_o

A wild koala bear appears! There were some wild kangaroos too.

Stradbroke Island.

Weed Town Nimbin, NSW, Australia

1040707_10151966673743998_550333638_o

Two dead blonds I guess referred to Diana, Princess of Wales, and Marilyn Monroe (shouldn’t they be blondes though?), but I can’t figure which three songs the sign was referring to – “Candle In The Wind 1997”, “Candle In The Wind”, and “Your Song”, perhaps? Though the original CITW was a massive flop so I don’t get why it was even included.

Anyways…In this town that surely pleases The Queen of Pop Madonna, you get to see loads of people selling marijuana. Actual weeds, cookies, and all that. Everyone tries to sell you stuff.

I didn’t try anything though. All in all just a hippie town.

Brisbane, Australia

271234_10151908816313998_2303641_o

As a part of my undergraduate teacher-training course, the government paid for the tuition, air-tickets, accommodation, cultural activities, and food for two months at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Life down under wasn’t particularly exciting, what’s with the café closing at 3pm and the terrible public transportation, but Aus was definitely a place where I thought I could retire in.

966847_10151917240858998_831009673_o

This post is about the city proper – Greater Brisbane includes to the south the world-famous Gold Coast and to the north Sunshine Coast, and lays the claim to be the largest city in the world. But let’s not. They aren’t all the same city.

977199_10151917240398998_420646629_o

Downtown Brisbane was just like any other colonial town, with numerous European buildings.

964630_10151913391328998_41667244_o

It’s not really that different from Hong Kong, both being former British colonies. And of course there’s the fact that Australia is an immigrant country with lots and lots of orientals. (I think Cantonese is actually the second-most spoken first language in the country.)

963953_10151917240093998_941496767_o

I may be biased in a way, or rather, ignorant. Even though I had been to many places by that point, it was mainly still usually around oriental Asia, and so the few European buildings in Brisbane (where I’ve been a few years prior, actually) might have looked better to me than they would now.

976596_10151917239023998_1854549156_o

A dinosaur in their museum. I’ve always liked casts like this.

1039897_10151964973758998_178485630_o

When you’re talking about Australia, of course you have to talk about its unique animals. Kangaroos are undeniably the most famous.

1048835_10151964973223998_2005700384_o

It’s sort of a petting zoo, and so they weren’t dangerous. I heard they could be if they were wild. Also, I did approach slowly and wasn’t standing tall.

1052491_10151964974163998_180486728_o

Very friendly bunch indeed.

1039819_10151964974738998_604476651_o

Joey, I’m so sorry; oh-woah-woah can you hear me

1053085_10151964973078998_1155624864_o

The Devil!

I don’t have a photo for it, but they have something called the butch turkey or something. They are everywhere and quite annoying. Apparently protected.

999019_10151969972708998_34466720_n

This was one of those times when you took a photo with some nobody and then they ended up being very famous. At the time, I thought I was just channelling the Princess of Pop Britney Spears at the Grammy’s; little did I know I was taking a picture with country-pop songstress Taylor Swift, the woman who managed to move over a million copies in their first week for three records straight!

980173_10151913388093998_246635930_o

One unique thing about Brisbane is the fact that boats are a part of its public transportation system.

977326_10151913389618998_727419975_o

And they also created an artificial beach for some reason.

1065057_10151981340698998_767774216_o

You may know Australia to be a huge country, but do you know their cigarette butts are proportionally even bigger?

963775_10151912652678998_1244790487_o

They like coffee so much they drink TARDISes of them. Totally addicted.

The university left much to be desired, by the way. One of the lecturers was trying to sell me creationism (which he called “intelligent design”). It was awkward.

I had an interesting experience though. I still can’t recall what actually happened, but my alarm didn’t sound and I woke up late. It was raining the night before, thus I slipped and fell on wooden ground before going to the other house for breakfast. I still can’t remember anything, but apparently I was walking towards the wrong direction, a classmate grabbed me to our coach (we were going on a school visit), and I kept asking everyone if I could just follow them for the rest of the day. In the end, they found me way too erratic and sent me to the hospital.

I had a concussion. The first thing I can recall is seeing one of my other lecturers next to my bed, asking if I realize one of the other classmates had run away. I didn’t, of course, since I wasn’t exactly conscious despite the fact that I was walking around with them. It turned out a girl ran off to New Zealand with her boyfriend without telling either university! And she stayed there for nine days before coming back. She was sent home right away.
